Watch 101: Glass
Posted on August 05 2018
DEFINED: Watch glass is the transparent covering within the face of the watch.
Acrylic Glass: The least expensive glass. Acrylic plastic is tough, flexible, transparent and light but can scratch easily.
Mineral Glass: This is the most common type of glass to be found in a designer watch. The glass will need to be changed over time and is produced through a combination of heat and chemicals.
Sapphire Crystal: Probably the most desirable watch glass, it is constructed from synthetic or real sapphire. Synthetic sapphire is constructed through crystallized aluminum oxide and has the same physical attributes (9 Mohs Scale) as natural sapphire but without the colouring. Of all of glass materials, sapphire crystal is the least prone to shatter or scratches.
